The next day, we had another wonderful breakfast and left the island with 9:00 am ferry. Our destination was Ayvalik which is a relatively big coastal town. But on the way, we planned to stop at few places. First we stopped by a town called Behram, also known as Behramkale (kale means castle). This is a small village built originally by Greeks. It is on top of a hill and has a castle that surrounds the buildings on top.
It was a challenging climb to the top but the view was certainly worth it. On the way to the top, there were many vendors selling scarfs, toys, jewelery, olives, soaps, etc. There was one vendor which we could not pass who was selling a type of sticky candy from my childhood. It is basically sticky candy on a stick. Kids loved it.
On top, the view was incredible and you could easily see the few boats on the water and the Greek islands in the background.
This place was one of the few places that had a good museum shop. It was small but it had cute things that were good quality. I feel like Turks have not yet figured out how to market all of the historical sites that we have. Certainly not as well as well as US or Europe. Maybe it is because there are so many of them...
From Behram,we headed to Asos which a tiny coastal village. It is only 30 minutes from Behram. It was such a small village that we had trouble driving in it's small streets to find a parking spot with our car. But it was so worth it. They built some sitting areas on top of the sea which was also helpful when you wanted to jump to the water. They had small restaurants on the back of each sitting area which served lunch and any type of drinks and snacks. We had lunch and pretty much spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the sun and the sea. And of course sipping some beer...
From there, we headed to our hotel at Ayvalik and more to come on that in the next post...
